Wafa Sultan on Al-Jazeera:
Wow, This Gal's Got Passion And Guts!

Have you seen this? I'm a little late to the party, as this aired on February 21, 2006 on Al-Jazeera:

Secularist Woman takes on Muslim "Medieval Mindset" on Arab TV.

Obviously, I'm not a secularist. But, I do believe in letting people have their beliefs. Beliefs can be debated and discussed and analyzed and upheld and scrutinized, but they cannot be forced. I have always been of the frame of mind of Christ: Those who will come to be one of us, will come; and those who will not be with us must be allowed to walk away in peace.

Judgment will come for us all, and at that time, God will judge fairly.

And if the secularists are right and nothing follows death, I still will have lived richly, because my faith has enhanced my daily life with indescribably pleasures. If it is a fantasy, it's been a lovely one.

But I am certain He is and He lives and I am His.

Jesus didn't twist arms, and we shouldn't either. He didn't behead those who rejected him. He pitied them. He felt love for them. He forgave them. And anytime his followers try to force religious conversions (history has its share of this as we all know), it's always disastrous.

Faith cannot be compelled.

One can legislate behavior--do this, don't do that; and this is a valid arena for civil action--but you cannot impose belief.

Faith must come from within and be genuine. Or it's not faith.

This gal gets that.

I will pray for her--though she will not covet those prayers--because she made herself, with her outspokenness, a target for jihadists. To them, she is now nothing less than a mouthy heretic, a "worthless female" one at that. We know what those monsters do to women who get out of line. We saw the Taliban at it, and Saudi Arabia, and Iran, and, oh, it goes on. And we know what they do to those who don't submit to their prophet or to Islamic Law or who are judged to be verbally offensive: Stone to the temple. Blade to the neck. Bullet to the head.

Pray for her protection, those of you who believe.

And for an even greater Truth to dwell in her one day.

I leave you with a bit of the transcript:

Wafa Sultan: The Jews have come from the tragedy (of the Holocaust), and forced the world to respect them, with their knowledge, not with their terror, with their work, not their crying and yelling. Humanity owes most of the discoveries and science of the 19th and 20th centuries to Jewish scientists. 15 million people, scattered throughout the world, united and won their rights through work and knowledge. We have not seen a single Jew blow himself up in a German restaurant. We have not seen a single Jew destroy a church. We have not seen a single Jew protest by killing people. The Muslims have turned three Buddha statues into rubble. We have not seen a single Buddhist burn down a Mosque, kill a Muslim, or burn down an embassy. Only the Muslims defend their beliefs by burning down churches, killing people, and destroying embassies. This path will not yield any results. The Muslims must ask themselves what they can do for humankind, before they demand that humankind respect them.

ADDENDUM 8/11: Carmen of In The Open: God & Culture pointed out in the comment section that she'd blogged on this months ago. Her post on Wafa Sultan is informative and worth reading. Ms Sultan had a traumtic event happen that turned her away from Islam ...and God. Carmen comments:

As a follower of Jesus, I resonate with Dr. Sultan’s burden to free people from a false worldview. It is a burden of many Christians carry. But how do we show people so badly traumatized by religion that there is a true God – a God who is good and righteous, holy and loving?

I don’t think it can be accomplished with words. We have to show them. And we can’t even do that: only Jesus can. As Christians, our task is to live in him – and then his life will shine through us to people questing in darkness. We will be so salty that people will finally know where to quench their thirst for the one true God.

Stories like this one are good opportunities to bring God-talk out into the open. They are also opportunities to examine ourselves and take stock of our lives. Are we living in him so others can find him to? Or are our words empty because our lives are too?

mir, i ran across an article about her awhile back and blogged about it. you're right, she's a gutsy woman, someone who sees something is wrong and stands up to see it made right. as always, i appreciate your voice. blessings.

She is ignorant, anti Muslim. Every thing she said is faulty and she knows that, Muslims are the reason for the civilization in Europe and USA, or did you forget the dark era in Europe for almost 600 years, when was the islam is the only civilization on the face of the earth. Nobody stays on the top for ever. Usama Bin Laden doesn't represnt Muslims, if you want to know who represent the Muslims is prophet Mohamed, he is the greatest man on the earth.

You can see how much hate in her eyes. One day every body will know who the terrorist( people who has the air jets and bomb the innocent).

It's not her eyes that have hate. It's the imam's, who is too busy calling her a heretic to make a coherent--and persuasive--argument.

On judgment day, we shall all see what's truth. I have no fear of the God who loves me. I know in whom I have believeth, and it's not Osama's God.

First of all, I said I don't follow Usama Bin Laden, second I agree with you that the way the Imam answerd her wasn't the best way, becaue they didn't teach him how to be smart Muslim. Any way I can tell you she told a lot of lies and that's what the Imam should have focused on. Every single word she said about Islam is lie. you have first to distinguish between real Islam and what you think Islam is, if you read carefully about Islam and prophet Mohamed, you will know the truth, but I don't think you want to even do that, you jsut put you pre-judgment on what Usama bin laden says, Usama bin laden do nothing related to real Islam and I believe that he is an American agent(read his history).
